DIY Macrame Feather Earrings
For the past few weeks I've been trying to expand my knowledge and learn some Macrame art, what were the results? Peacefulness. Honestly, I'd turn on a calming playlist on Spotify and I would spend an hour just tying these knots and creating Macrame art. In the process of learning Macrame I decided to combine my enthusiasm for jewellery making with it. Thus enters this DIY - Macrame feather earrings. Take or leave what you want this tutorial and make this accessory your very own customised piece.
What you will need:
- Twine
- Pliers
- Scissors
- Beads - I chose feathered beads and two black beads
- Jump Rings
- Earring hooks
- Jewellery wire
Step One
Cut two lengths of your twine. This will be the spine of your feather, so whatever the height you want your feather to be, double the length and cut. For instance, I wanted the height of my feather to be roughly 6cms, so I cut my pieces at 12cm each.
Step Two
Cut twine to the same length of the desired height. This will be the barb of your feather. I had cut 26 pieces at the length of 6cms. The more pieces you use the more full your feather will be.
Step Three
Using the piece of twine that was cut as the spine of your feather, tie a larks head knot to a jump ring. If you're unsure on how to tie a larks head knot click HERE for a quick video tutorial I found on youtube.
Step Four
Grab the pieces of twine that will be the barb of your feather. Using the basic overhand knot (click HERE for video tutorial), tie the pieces of barb to the spine of your feather. Make sure all the pieces are tightly pulled and compact.
Step Five
Unravel each individual twine to add volume to the feather.
Step Six
Using scissors, trim and cut the feather into the desired shape.
Step Seven
Assemble and attach your bead arrangement to your macrame feather design.
Step Eight
Attach your earring hook and you're done! You don't just have to limit this arrangement to just earrings, you could mix and match, experiment and play. This arrangement would make a perfect focal point for a necklace, keyring or bookmarker. The sky is the limit with this one.
I hope you all enjoyed today's blog post and feel inspired to be creative. Give macrame a try and see just how relaxing it can be. See you all in the next one.
xx/Vanessa
